Ocean ecosystems face unparalleled human pressures from climate change, acidification, habitat loss, pollution, and unsustainable fishing. These ecosystems are also rich sources ecosystem goods and services. The Blue Economy concept thus identifies the oceans as areas for potential sustainable development. Sustainable use of marine and coastal resources demands a strong local and national understanding of opportunities and threats. The GEF is well placed to help countries identify sustainable public and private national investments within the Blue Economy, through funding of collective management of coastal and marine systems and implementation of integrated ocean policies and reforms. The roundtable will discuss the opportunities and challenges in advancing the Blue Economy, and how GEF and partners can work together for healthy oceans.
