     Punta del Este, Uruguay, June 27, 2012 – Today marks the official start of the 4th Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Mercury.  The session was opened by Minster Fernando Lugris, Chair of the INC, and was followed by a choir of children from 57 schools from Montevideo.  The music set a charming tone to the event.

The GEF provides financial support to developing countries and Countries with Economies in Transition (CEITs) for the implementation of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. The GEF is also supporting CEITs to phase out Ozone Depleting Substances to fulfill their obligation towards Montreal Protocol.

On Friday, June 1st, the GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP), the Institute for Society, Population and Nature (ISPN), the host institution of GEF SGP, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) hosted a field visit for journalists to highlight and share the experience of the GEF SGP in the sustainable use of biodiversity in the Cerrado region in the context of the upcoming Rio+20 conference of Sustainable Development.
