COLOGNE, GERMANY, May 30, 2012 – The total value of the carbon market grew by 11 percent in 2011, to $176 billion, and transaction volumes reached a new high of 10.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) according to a new report from the World Bank.

Bonn, 25 May 2012 – Meeting in Bonn for the first time after the historic UN Climate Change Conference in Durban, governments made progress in ensuring that this year's conference in Doha, at the end of 2012, can take the next essential steps towards meeting the long-term challenge of climate change.

  Traditionally, indigenous populations of the Venezuelan Amazon, which were mostly nomadic until a few decades ago, applied ancestral agricultural techniques that helped preserve the forest due to their seasonal rotation.

 Today, most of those formerly nomadic communities have settled permanently. They continue to grow their produce in fixed locations resulting in significant land degradation in some areas, and mass shelling of trees in others.

The Witsand Sustainable Human Settlement Project received E3’s Superior Achievement Award, presented by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers to the best of today’s projects in environmental engineering.

To mark the World Heritage Day, 18th April, and World Earth Day, 22nd April the GEF Small Grants Programme in collaboration with the host institution Center for Environment Education (CEE) implemented a week-long event, extending from the 18th until the 25th April, at Qutub Minar—a UNESCO World Heritage Site in New Delhi.
