Establishment of Private Natural Heritage Reserves in the Brazilian Cerrado
Project Summary
This project aims at the expansion of the protected areas in the Cerrado Region in order to enhance biodiversity conservation, through the implementation of Private Natural Heritage Reserves, involving private owners and NGOs in the area. Project sites are located near the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park and Grande Sertão Veredas National Park. This project aims at the expansion of the protected areas in the Cerrado Region in order to enhance biodiversity conservation. The project will (i) establish four Private Natural Heritage Reserves (RPPNs) with management plans; (ii) prepare and implement an awareness program in order to disseminate to other landowners and associations the best practices and lessons learned; (iii) prepare and implement an awareness program viewing local communities support in the participation of the RPPN project; (iv) train technical staff from RPPN in protected areas planning and management, and ecotourism development; and (v) establish a RPPN support network, consisting of RPPN managers, NGOs, relevant government staff members and local communities.
