The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will help put the world on track to a sustainable, prosperous future. But how can we build on them to tame the drivers of global environmental degradation and provide the stable conditions required for economic growth and poverty eradication?

On September 27th, the GEF held an event that looked at the needs, challenges and opportunities to protect the global commons, Earth's shared natural resources, on an increasingly crowded planet.

Thomas L. Friedman, award-winning writer and New York Times columnist, moderated a free-flowing conversation among leaders from government, business, international agencies, and academia on what successful implementation of the SDGs will mean for people and the planet.

   Speakers:

  • Mr. Jim Yong Kim, President, World Bank Group
  • H.E. L.T. Tobgay, Prime Minister, Bhutan
  • Ms. Judith Rodin, President, Rockefeller Foundation
  • Mr. Johan Rockstrom, Director, Stockholm Resilience Center
  • Ms. Naoko Ishii, CEO & Chairperson, Global Environment Facility
